The cash for clunkers bill had been passed in the US in 2009. What is a clunker as per its official definition? It’s a car that is driveable and made within 25 years having a fuel efficiency of not less than 18 mpg.

How does the program work?

You could trade your used and old car towards the buying of a new one and the more mileage your new car gives the better money you get for buying it. You could get around 3,500$ to 4,500$ under this program. The Jalponik’s chart gave an accurate information on how much you were in a position to claim. The minimum fuel efficiency of the new car bought under the scheme must be at least 22 mpg, for SUVs and small trucks it should be minimum 18 mpg and for large trucks it should be 15 mpg. The rejected cars shall be recycled and salvaged once they are given in.

What is the time frame?

The bill when it came into force offered one million new cars and the offer was open from July 1st to 1st November 2009. The bill was to be reviewed in fall after which some changes were liable to be made. The bill had ensured that it was not possible to purchase an old car and use it for sale under the program. The car needs to be insured by the same holder at least a year before the program.

Environmentally useful idea

The bill had been brought into force considering the environmental benefits of taking old and inefficient cars off the roads. Old cars which use more fuel and less environment friendly in terms of pollution are still being used since there is little incentive to sell them off and buy a new one.

However environmentalists were opposing the idea since it would mean inducing the sale of those vehicles which are still functioning and usable. Also the vouchers did not provide for the purchase of old vehicles even though they may be more efficient. The economic idea behind the bill was to quicken the slow pace of automobiles sales. It had also aimed to mark fuel efficiency as an important idea that ought to be considered before buying a vehicle in America. Another argument against the bill is that its emphasis on fuel efficiency will make people opt for foreign cars thus depriving the American car manufacturers of the much needed helping hand.
